Pete Mortimer wins Diversity Award

Peter Mortimer, author of Camp Shatila: a writer’s chronicle, published by Five Leaves, won the arts section of the North East Celebrating Diversity Awards. The award was presented on October 2nd, the organiser being Equality North East. The award was given for Peter Mortimer’s Shatila project, which involved setting up a children’s theatre group in the Palestinian refugee camp in Shatila, then bringing the group to the North East where they performed to 1,200 people in a tour that ended at The Sage in Gateshead.
This award comes soon after Peter Mortimer was shortlisted for the 2009 Arab-British Culture Award for his play RIOT, published in English and Arabic by Five Leaves.
Peter Mortimer was born in Nottingham where he was taught by Booker-prize winning novelist Stanley Middleton. He lives in Cullercoats where he is artistic director of Cloud Nine theatre company.
