Wanted – Poet Laureate

Derbyshire County Council is looking to appoint the next Derbyshire Poet Laureate.
The appointment is for two years, running from October 2009 to September 2011, and the brief will include a set of commissions, workshops and events. It is also expected that the poet will use the honorary title to seek further commissions, workshops and appearances during their tenure. The Laureate will be featured as part of the 2010 Derbyshire Literature Festival, and given a skills development bursary.
The Derbyshire Poet Laureate not only needs to be an excellent poet, but will also need to demonstrate an aptitude for working and performing in a wide variety of community settings.
Applications are welcome from poets living, working or studying in Derbyshire.

Poet and editor Wayne Burrows introduces a reading from The Protein Songs, a sequence of poems commissioned by Retina Dance Company for adaptation into choreography in their 2006 performance Eleven Stories For The Body, Distance To Our Soul, followed by film footage of the dance created from the words.

Gravitiy Racing Competition

A donation of £100 from Grace Dieu Writers’ Circle to Rainbows Children’s Hospice for a Gravity Racing Schools Writing Competition run by LOUGHBOROUGH COLLEGE exceeding 50 entries was handed over to Rainbows Ambassador, Dr Keith Ball at Castle Rock High School, Coalville who were the winning school overall in the nationally run competition.
The Best Overall Schools trophy was sponsored by Aggregate Industries whose Operations Manager at Bardon Hill Quarry, Richard Page also attended the presentation along with Grace Dieu Writers’ Circle steering group member Joyce Clarke.
Formula Gravity Director David Ackroyd the mastermind behind both the breaking of the World Gravity car land speed record at 62 MPH and the building of ‘The Lotus Eater’ car at LOUGHBOROUGH COLLEGE showed pupils at Castle Rock, the world famous ‘Lotus Eater’ gravity racer. A car built in a world record time of four and a half days and raced by TV’s Gadget Show in front of record breaking viewing figures.
There was more success for local school, Castle Rock with 12 year old Katie Walker winning the first prize in the competition’s Poetry category. The school also won a Draper Tools Bench Drill as a prize for winning the title of Best Overall School.

The Lyric Lounge

July 2009 will see The Y Theatre transformed into The Lyric Lounge – a unique performance space celebrating the power of live literature. The Lyric Lounge is part of Renaissance East Midlands’ contribution to the region-wide Igniting Ambition programme and is undertaken in partnership with Arts Council England East Midlands. For seven days, the Lounge will bring laughter, lyrics, music and visual magic to one of Leicester’s finest live venues. As part of the cultural programme for the Special Olympics, Lounge events are expected to attract hundreds of artists, athletes, local families and literature fans alike. In the daytime, there will be a chill out space in the Y Bar area, where visitors will be treated to coffee, books films, workshops and shows. WORD! is Leicester’s longest running poetry and spoken word night. In this one off ‘Lyric Lounge’ Sunday special, it will feature Lucy English as booked act. Lucy used to be the hippy chick love mother sex goddess until she got too told. She now likes gardening and watching Delia Smith on I-player. Poets and Lyricists wishing to perform on the open mic, should arrive at 7.30pm and register with the compere, Lydia Towsey. The night kicks off at 8pm. There will be a raffle!

The return of this groundbreaking showcase featuring powerful and poetic contributions from 11 young men.
In November 2008, 7 young men of diverse cultural origin celebrated their talent in all that was spoken. Revisiting The Y in what promises to be another moving performance, these young men will be joined by 4 more, in exploring experiences of life, love, nature and nurture. Accompanied by music and visuals and incorporating spoken word, hip-hop, poetry, rap and monologue, Showcase Live aims to spark debate around mental health issues. Artists have been mentored by high priestess of poetry Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze with support from emerging poet Sureshot. Directed by Melanie Abrahams.

Handle with care and be sure to hold the ‘Write Way Up’ in this multimedia extravaganza. Directed and mentored by Kevin Fegan. Produced by Pam Thompson for WORD! This night is in partnership with Leicestershire Museums and will explore both artefacts and Olympic values.

John Hegley headlines and comperes this eclectic evening. Delve deep into the world of one of the UK’s most prolific storytellers. Radio regular, published writer, and popular glasses wearer, John Hegley has made his mark everywhere. From sell out shows at Edinburgh Festival to comedy festivals worldwide, his poems about dogs, glasses and a whole lot more, have really gone the distance. John has been busy passing on his trade secrets to his supporting acts, local older men. Also featuring the winning poet from the ‘Lyric Lounge’ Olympic art competition. John’s performance will be followed by an onstage question and answer session.
